Ian: Engineering Expert and Teacher

Ian claims to be a very logical thinker and has always enjoyed structure in his working life with ‘no surprises’.

After working in the aerospace industry for over 20 years, an offer to work abroad and leave behind a young family was something that did not suit his lifestyle.

So, Ian took the leap and did something he had always wanted to do – teach.

Transitioning from Aerospace to Teaching

With a wealth of knowledge in maths and engineering, Ian headed back to university and qualified as a teacher, specialising in technology.

Ian has been in education for more than 25 years and is now a temporary worker.

Putting his teaching skills and engineering experience to good use over the years, Ian worked across various schools in the North East, eventually becoming Head of Department. Five years ago, Ian realised it was time to slow down and although he wanted to continue to teach, he wanted more control of his day-to-day work.

The Benefits of Temporary Teaching Roles

By signing up with a temp agency, it has given Ian the chance to work in a range of schools, with the understanding that he can work the hours he chooses. He has worked at the same Academy for four years, through a supply agency.

Some people ask Ian., “why are you with a temp agency?”. As he explains, his personal life dictates how often he works. If there is an issue, he can deal with it or if he simply needs a break, he can do that too.

Building Relationships in New Environments

Ian has never had difficulty building relationships and has easily adapted to working in a range of different schools and meeting new staff.

Having travelled the world as an engineer, he is confident in building an instant connection with those around him, which works well in a temporary role.

His current school are accommodating to his needs and continue to consultant Ian with what he would like to teach. With a keen interest in maths, a fundamental part of engineering, he has been primarily teaching this for the last three years.

Achieving Work-Life Balance Through Temporary Work

One of the many benefits of temporary work for Ian, is the flexibility and reduced hours.

Having worked 12-hour days as a permanent teacher for more than two decades, he can now have a better work life balance spending more time with his family and enjoying afternoon walks on the beach.

Earning Respect as a Supply Teacher

Ian has been impressed with the level of respect the students continue to show him as a supply teacher, both in and out of the classroom.

Although there have been times when children have battled his teaching in the classroom, he has never given up on them and very recently, helped a group of Year 10 students pass their GCSE mock exams, much to his delight.

Ian’s Passion for Teaching and Temporary Roles

Listening to Ian, it’s clear how much passion he has for teaching. For Ian, temporary work offers the perfect balance between the freedom to pursue what he loves and the ability to maintain a fulfilling personal life.

The flexibility of a temp role is extremely valuable to him, enabling him to enjoy a rewarding career while prioritising his work-life balance.
